The real reason it is going away is to slow down progression in high-end raiding. The fact that it will benefit "trials" and the odd person filling out a guild run is just gravy. Hardcore progression guilds were clearing content way too fast in Legion. This was due to a combination of titanforging and split runs. When some people see that "GUILD X" downed Mythic Big Bad Guy they start to think "what's next? someone beat the raid so we need new content asap!" I know others were also unhappy with the fact that Mythic was being cleared well before the final wing was released to LFR. Why wait 2 months for the last boss when Mythic is already beaten.
